Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity and Cytotoxicity Effects of Extracts of Piper nigrum L. and Piperine

P. nigrum L. extracts and the piperine alkaloid have important antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated antimicrobial activity cytotoxicity of piperine, a compound isolated from Extracts obtained via maceration, soxhlet, purification steps, addition to were used study. Spectroscopic methods, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, differential calorimetry, characterize piperine. In microbiological analyses, extract maceration-derived sample showed high efficiency inhibiting Salmonella spp. (MIC < 100 ?g/mL). The soxhlet-derived promising inhibitory against almost all microorganisms, with negligible inhibition Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Favorable coefficients also observed Staphylococcus aureus ?g/mL) for steps-derived sample. Piperine an excellent coefficient most inactivity only Cytotoxicity evaluation assays cancer cell lines revealed that exhibited potential on tested tumor lines, causing decrease viability achieving IC50 less than 30 ?g/mL. analyzed seeds cytotoxic non-tumor lines.
